The piece, titled ‘Giving your teens a safe driving talk can prevent tragedy,’ was inspired by a recent spate of tragic motor vehicle accidents involving teenagers across the Southern Georgian Bay region and Southern Ontario. It focuses on raising awareness of the risks that teenaged and less-experienced drivers face when taking the wheel, particularly when distracted or when driving in dangerous winter weather.

As the Collingwood Today column explains: “According to the advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the rate of serious injury or death resulting from accidents for 19-year-olds is higher than for any age group of drivers under 75, while 2022 statistics show that road-related accidents were among the leading causes of death for Canadians aged 15 to 24.

Many of these incidents involved drugs or alcohol. Driver distraction and inexperience were also major factors. Put simply, novice and young drivers remain disproportionately vulnerable when behind the wheel.”

It goes on to offer practical, actionable strategies that both parents and young drivers can use to stay safe on Collingwood-area roads, from gaining added experience before driving alone in snow and ice, avoiding driving at night and minimizing the number of passengers in their car.
